Search is being rewritten. And the way your brand gets discovered is changing with it.
Traditional SEO focused on ranking. The goal was simple: get your page to the top of Google. But AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google SGE don’t deliver rankings. They deliver answers.
These tools don’t "crawl" pages in the old-school sense. They interpret them. Summarize them. Choose what to cite. And ignore the rest.
That means even high-ranking brands can be left out of AI-generated results if their content isn’t structured for meaning.
Scan top-ranked and semantically relevant pages: AI looks at a broader set of sources, including high-authority sites and thematically related content, even if that content isn't ranked #1.
Summarize information to generate clear answers: AI models compress what they find into concise summaries. If your message isn't clearly written or well-structured, it won't be part of the summary.
Prioritize clarity, authority, and structure over keyword tricks: Pages that are clear, direct, and show trustworthiness are more likely to be chosen than keyword-optimized content.
If your content can’t be easily interpreted, it won’t be included.
So the big shift is this: You're no longer just trying to get seen. You're trying to get summarized.
